A study was made on a control method for an adaptive cruise control (ACC) system that uses vehicle-to-vehicle communication to achieve a substantial improvement in string stability and natural headway distance response characteristics at lower levels of longitudinal G. As one control strategy for obtaining such improvements, a control system was constructed in this study using a model predictive control method. ACC simulations were conducted to confirm the performance against the wide variety of driving situations of the intermediate drivers. Simulations were also conducted using test data recorded for driver following behavior in manual driving in a three-vehicle platoon on a proving ground coarse. The results showed that the proposed system achieved higher levels of required ACC performance with respect to string stability, natural headway distance response behavior and reduction of the rate of deceleration under a wide variety of driving situations.
