The DME IDI compression ignition engine was experimented for the mixture formation promotion of DME low pressure injection in a small compression ignition engine. The influence of the divided-chamber volume ratio on combustion was investigated under a connecting passage area ratio constant condition. Consequently, High thermal efficiency and low NOx emission were able to be achieved in comparatively delaying fuel injection timing, because mixture formation was promoted in the divided-chamber. And heat loss increased when the volume of the divided-chamber was large, the mixture was not promoted when it was small, and a unburnt fuel flowed out to the main chamber. Therefore, high thermal efficiency and the low emission gas were obtained by selecting suitable the divided-chamber volume in the high load region where much fuel existed. And the operating range was also expanded
