An experiment was conducted to investigate heat transfer characteristics of tap water in microchannels. The tested channels were horizontally placed straight rectangular channels with 12 mm breadth, having a channel height from 1.0mm to 3.0mm. Heat was supplied from the bottom surface. The experimental data in the saturated boiling region were compared with the heat transfer correlation proposed by Kandlikar and Balasubramanian (2004). The comparison showed that this correlation could reproduce the experimental data, if a suitable modification is made, and the modification was determined as a function of the Boiling number and the Confinement number. The modified heat transfer correlation agreed with the experimental data in the convective boiling dominant region with an accuracy of ±20%, and at the same time, predicted an existence of the optimum channel height at which the maximum heat transfer coefficient is obtained.
