To evaluate an effect of surface treatment with fine particle shot peening (FPSP) on very high-cycle fatigue properties of extruded magnesium alloys, fatigue test was performed in an open environment at room temperature using a four-axis cantilever-type rotating bending fatigue machine for hourglass-shaped specimens of AZ80, T5-heat-treated AZ80 (AZ80T5) and AZ61 treated with two types of FPSP condition. Fatigue test results showed that the FPSP did not contribute to improvement of fatigue life for AZ80F and AZ80T5 alloy because of an increase in the surface roughness of the specimen after treatment. Therefore, fatigue test was carried out using a specimen reduced the surface roughness by emery-polishing. Fatigue failure of AZ80 and AZ80T5 was occurred on the specimen surface at high stress amplitude level and changed to interior of the specimen at low stress amplitude level. An improvement in fatigue strength of AZ80 and AZ80T5 with FPSP of 10-25 %, depending on applied stress amplitude, was observed only in the region of high stress amplitude. On the other hand, FPSP treated AZ61 specimens exhibited an improvement in fatigue strength of 5-15 % and failed on the specimen surface at whole stress amplitude level tested. It was suggested that an improvement of fatigue strength was controlled not only by the effect of high compressive residual stress and high hardness but also the diffuse nature of crystal preferred orientation in the surface layer after FPSP treatment.
