Wake characteristios and characteristics of switching flow behind two circular cylinders plaoed in side-by:side arrangement were investigated experimentally in a uniform fiow at a Reynolds number of 5.5xlorln the bistable fiow regime, 77D=O.2-jl.2 (Z spacing between the cylinders; D, diameter), when highllow-frequency mode switched to low/high-frequency mode, ahother short duration stable flow pattern (which can be tetmed an intermediate flow pattern) persisted in the intermediate time, in which the gap fiow was eriented parallel to the free-strearn flow and the Strouhal number was almost equal to that of a single cylinder. VVhvelet analysis of velocity signals obtained from two hotwires corroborated the appearance of the intermediate flow pattern. in the case of synchronized vortex shedding and even in the interrnediate fiow pattern, a predominant in-phase synchronized vortex was found to shed.
