The Kansei quality of a product has become increasingly important in consumer product design, as it enhances value of the product (Yanagisawa, 2011, Chang and Guan, 2014). The Japanese word ‘Kansei’ is a widely used technical term in engineering, industrial design and other fields (Nagamachi, 1995). Kansei quality is one of the product qualities, and product with Kansei quality directly appeals to the consumer’s five senses and evokes feeling and impressions such as comfort, luxury and sophistication. Generally, the Kansei quality of the target product must be assessed through individual customer’s sensitivity, which will discern their preference. As the target product may be used by various customers, the customer preference has inherent uncertainties that depend on personal value. However, in the current product design process, product designers tend to depend on limited knowledge rather than comprehensive customer preference because of small amount of customer preference information. Researchers have modelled the uncertainties by various methods involving both the properties of the product and outside conditions, such as users, use cases and market situations (Weck et al., 2007, Stone et al., 2013). A technique that comprehensively and quantitatively visualises customer preference is desired in the early stage of product design.
