In this study, the leaching characteristics of heavy metals including Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in CFBC bottom ash were evaluated to applying bottom ash for mine backfilling. The environmental safety of metals in bottom ash was determined by eluate pH variation and conventional leaching tests including USEPA method 1311 (TCLP), 1312 (SPLP), 1313 (specified pH), and Korean leaching test for industrial wastes (KSLT). In addition, it was also investigated that the leaching characteristics of heavy metals from the bottom ash by contact with limestone mine drains in Korea. The experimental results showed that the leaching of heavy metals from the bottom ash increased with decreasing eluate pH. Although Ni and Zn were leached up to approximately 2.2 mg/L in a strongly acidic leaching condition (eluate pH 2; USEPA method 1313), the amount of leached metals by the leaching tests applied in this study met the standards for Korean waste control and drinking water.
