Purposes of growth hormone treatment include 1) improvement of psychosocial problems due to short stature by allowing short children to reach a normal height at an early stage of treatment; and 2) enabling short children to adapt better to social life by allowing them to reach normal adult height. Normal adult heights are defined as greater than –2 SD of adult height SDS (159.1 cm for males and 147.6 cm for females) in academic terms, whereas taller than 160 cm (–1.86 SD) for males and taller than 150 cm (–1.56 SD) for females are accepted as normal adult heights commonly in our daily lives. Therefore, I would like to hereinafter analyze the therapies in view of enabling males to reach a height of 160 cm or more and females to reach a height of 150 cm or more. Figures 1 (a) (b) show the distribution of adult heights of isolated GHD (IGHD) cases after GH treatment from the database of the Foundation for Growth Science (FGS) in Japan and the National Children’s Hospital (NCH). Fifty-nine percent of isolated GHD boys reached a height of 160 cm or more, while the ratio of girls who reached an adult height of 150 cm or more was 36% and 24%, at the respective institutions.
