It has been evident for some time that the population is aging all over the world, but this is especially true in countries like Spain. The quality of life of older people varies considerable depending on factors such as social class, gender, personal history, and also sexual orientation and gender identity. These differences must be taken into account in social work intervention. The present study looks at the older LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) community, a sector of the population that often experiences worse living conditions and less attention from social intervention professionals. In its approach to the topic, a review of existing literature is undertaken in order to contextualize the situation of elders in society in general and of elders belonging to the LGBT community in particular. The second part of the study looks at social work intervention with an older transsexual or transgender adult (the term transgender has been more frequently used in recent years to include all persons whose gender identity does not correspond with the gender assigned to them at birth), in order to provide references on the unique characteristics of this group and possible guidelines for social work intervention.
