In a context of repeated attacks on the achievements of the welfare state, it is important to reflect on the commons, a term being used more and more frequently but often without proper clarification of its multiple meanings. This article not only debates different ideas, it also points out some consequences that may arise and the impact they could have on social intervention: idealist visions of collectivity; unilaterality in points of view concerning direct solidarity; devaluation of the indirect solidarity developed with the participation of the State; and, in short, a weakening of proposals that advocate a reorganization and defence of the achievements of the welfare state and its redistributing function.
