How to enhance the autonomy and independence of older adults, empowering them and at the same time ensuring the protection of their legal and ethical rights, is a subject on which social workers must reflect. In social work, achievements should be reached by the participants themselves and our professional attention should always be focused on the protagonists: the elderly. A professional approach that focuses on the individual and on that individual’s capacity to choose his or her destiny lays at the foundation of this methodological proposal based on decision-making, which is an inherent part of all relational processes and closely associated with the reasons for which the elderly person may approach the system.
