In this article, we adopt a structural approach of social representation and analyse the representations created by sergipanos - who live nearby or far from gypsies' communities - regarding that social category. Our main hypothesis is that those who live nearby gypsies construct the most negative images than those who live far from gypsies. In this research, we interviewed 300 participants who were not gypsies: 153 lived nearby and 147 lived far from them. It was used an interview which had a free association with the word "gypsies" as an inducing term. The results demonstrated that the social representations of gypsies are portrayed as negative stereotypes. Moreover, our hypothesis was confirmed because gypsies were mainly represented as "different", "criminals" and "troublemakers" for those who live nearby, whilst "nomad", "physical appearance" and "mysticism" were the words used by those who live far from them. The results are discussed based on theories which deal with prejudice and stereotypes.
