On a new poultry farm where avian infectious bronchitis (IB) vaccine had not been applied before, growing chickens were inoculated with a mixed live vaccine of Newcastle disease (ND) and IB on December 25, 1978, for the first time. Twelve days later, three groups of hens began to manifest respiratory symptoms and a decrease in egg production on this farm. These hens showed an increase in titer of neutralizing antibody against IB in the convalescent stage. A virus was isolated from the trachea of diseased hens. It presented a strong relationship with the vaccine virus used in the cross neutralization test, suggesting that the IB vaccine virus might have been transmitted from the vaccinated growing chickens to the laying hens.
