大腸菌は,通常人や動物の腸管内正常細菌叢を構成す る細菌の1種である.しかしながら,ある種の大腸菌は 人や動物に下痢や敗血症などの腸管内あるいは腸管外感 染症を引き起こす(表1).下痢の原因となる大腸菌は現 在少なくとも6種類に分類されている.すなわち,腸管 病原性大腸菌(enteropathogenic Escherichia coli : EPEC),腸管毒素原性大腸菌(enterotoxigenic E. coli : E T E C),腸管組織侵入性大腸菌(e n t e r o i n v a s i v e E. coli : EIEC),腸管出血性大腸菌(enterohemorrhagic E. coli : EHEC),腸管凝集性大腸菌(enteroaggregative E. coli : EAEC),及び腸管拡散付着性大腸菌 (diffusely adherence E. coli : DAEC)がある.一方, 腸管外感染症の原因となる大腸菌として尿路感染性大腸 菌(uropathogenic E. coli : UPEC),髄膜炎/敗血症 起因大腸菌(meningitis E. coli : MNEC)や細胞壊死 因子産生性大腸菌(necro-toxigenic E. coli : NTEC) 等がある[1, 2].
