The aim of this article is to analyse a topic that has been un- derstudied in the realm of the Social Sciences of sport, namely: the globalisation process. Specifically, we present a sociological reflection about the spread of sport along the world. The start- ing point is the influence of the British Empire in the spreading of the sport culture. In addition, this article could provide some clues for future research. To this end, we study the origin and development of football in the Canary Islands, both sociologi- cally and historically.
