Home security has been one of the most concerned issues in the daily life. The majority of the traditional home security usually put much dependence on locks. However, it is inconvenient for people to carry a lot of keys to open the door. In this paper a new human-machine interface is developed as the home security system. The developed system applies the knocking action as input interface to unlock the door without using keys. First, some unlock regions on the door are set. When a user knocks the door, the system retrieves knocking information from six vibration sensors on the door. Then, the pattern recognition algorithm is used for identifying the user’s knocking information and locating the knocking position on the door. In this paper, the k -nearest neighbor algorithm is employed to construct the identification classifiers. According to the simulation results, the accuracies to identify the correct knocking regions are 90% to 93%. In additions, the developed home security system achieves satisfied performance in the field trails.
