Stanisław Ossowski, 1897–1963, was one of the most versatile and infl uential fi gures in Polish sociology. His lifetime interests revolved around the issues of nation, but his output in the fi elds of theory of aesthetics and social classes is more extensive. Can one refer to a theory of nation by Ossowski? Of the six meanings of ‘sociological theory’ discerned by Robert Merton,1 Ossowski’s approach was closest to explication of notions, which he deals with in his best-known text in the fi eld of national studies, Analiza socjologiczna pojęcia ojczyzny [A sociological analysis of the notion of homeland], with his proposed defi nition:
