Since the introduction of monoclonal antibodies by Kohler and Milstein in 1975, monoclonal antibody technology has become a key research tool of the biotechnology era, and unfolded many new areas of biological and clinical research. The technology provides unlimited quantities of standard, well-characterized, pure and homogenous reagents for use in various aspects of biomedical science. Application of this technology has now extended well beyond the research laboratory into diagnosistic and therapeutic fields. This review provides an introduction to the principle underlying production of monoclonal antibodies and highlights current areas where these antibodies have been successfully introduced into practice of pathology and laboratory medicine.
