Several reports have indicated a depression in intestinal absorption of essential elements including magnesium, iron, zinc, copper, and manganese from increasing dietary calcium. 1 51 We also observed decreased concentrations of tissue iron, zinc, manganese, and nickel by increasing dietary calcium. 6 •7 1 However, we found that supplementation of calcium to diet caused an increase in liver molybdenum and kidney cobalt. 71 The concentrations of molybdenum in other tissues including kidney, heart, spleen, tibia, and serum were not influenced by dietary levels of calcium (unpublished data). Molybdenum is required for the function of the metalloenzymes xanthine oxidase and sulfite oxidase in tissues of animals. 81 To elucidate the physiological implication of the calcium effect on liver molybdenum, this study was designed to examine the influence of dietary calcium on these enzymes in liver.
