Bioluminescent bacteria are widely distributed in many different marine habitats, and members of at least 30 genera in ll families of teleost fishes possess specialized light organs in which luminous bacteria occur.1~3) On studying the symbiotic association of luminous bacteria with certain fish, it was found that the association is species specific, that is, each group of fish is associated with only one bacterial species.1'3 ~7) Although the association of symbionts with the host fish, Acropomatid, is known, the symbiotic luminous bacteria have not been identified yet.1>3>8) Here we report the identification of luminous symbionts isolated from the light organ of the fish, Acropoma japonicum. The fish, Acropomajaponicum, were collected in January 1984 from a depth of 50100moff the seacoast of Kochi prefecture. Dissection of the fish was carried out according to the anatomical chart of Haneda.8) After the surface of each light organ had been sterilized with 70% ethanol and washed with a sterile 3% NaCl solution, it was crushed in an aliquot of the sterile 3%NaCl solution with a homogenizer, aseptically. The homogenate was spread on MNagar medium,9'10) which is a nutritionally complete, seawater medium. All colonies that grew on the MN agar mediumshowed strong luminescence after incubation for 24hr at 20°C. The 135 luminous isolates from the light organs of four fish, Acropoma japonicum, were picked up and maintained on MNagar medium. Identification was carried out according to the methodology of Reichelt and Baumann,n)Baumannand Baumann,2) Yang et al.,12) and Baumann et al.13) The characteristics of the 135 luminous symbionts are summarized in Table I.
