Amongthe s-triazine compoundsthat show manykinds of physiological properties,1 ~7) s-triazine herbicides have usually been shown to inhibit the growth of intact plants, and this has been attributed to a blockage of electron transfer in photosystem II.8) The typical phytotoxic symptoms of s-triazine herbicides are foliar chlorosis and subsequent necrosis.9) Previously, we reported that a-substituted benzylamino-s-triazines (1) strongly inhibited the growth of common paddy weeds, and their phytotoxic symptoms varied with the modification of substituents on the a-benzylic carbon (Rx and R2), amino group (R3 and R4) and X group (Fig. l).10) In this paper, we discuss the effect of substituents on the aromatic ring of a-methylbenzylamino-5-triazines (2).
