A new antimetabolite, nourseimycin, an antagonist of l-proline, was isolated from the fermentation broth of a strain of Streptomyces noursei. Nourseimycin, C9H15N3O6·2H2O, is a dipeptide which contains L-alanine and an unknown amino acid. Its antimicrobial activity in the minimal medium was weakened by the addition of l-proline. Some amino acids and peptides also weakened its antimicrobial activity.
