Previously we reported that the hydroper oxides of some fatty acids and hydrocarbons showed the mutagenicity by the Ames test . 1,2) The mutagenicity appeares only when these hydroperoxides are activated with rat liver microsomal fraction, S-9 Mix. From this fact, the hydroperoxides seemed to be a pro mutagen, and we prompted to search the ultimate mutagen that is produced from these hydroperoxides with S-9 Mix. The following interesting phenomena were observed in the course of this study . The mutagenicity of hydroperoxides could also be detected by activation with bovine liver catalase or EDTA-Fe as well as S-9 Mix . Further, the mutagenicity of hydroperoxides with these activators was prevented by scavengers of superoxide anion (O2-) and singlet oxygen (1O2), but not by scavengers of hydroxyl radical (OH•E).
