Sakai and Imaseki reported the purification and several properties of a proteinaceous inhibitor of auxin-induced ethylene synthesis extracted from etio lated mungbean hypocotyls.1,2) Marine algae may be a better source for isolating a large quantity of natural products. If the inhibitory substances similar in nature to the proteinaceous inhibitor found in the mungbean hypocotyl are present in a large quantity, algae will be a useful source of the protein for the agricultural use. Therefore, the possible presence in marine algae of inhibitory substances of ethylene evolution was examined. Such inhibitors in plants have been looked for to elucidate the mechanism of ethylene biosynthesis and some reports have been published.4•`8) This paper describes the presence in marine algae of inhibitory substances of ethylene evolution in higher plants. The algal fronds used in this experiment were collected in February 1975 at Shimoda, Shizuoka Prefecture. The inhibitory activity was determined by the method of Sakai and Imaseki using mungbean subapical hypocotyl segments.3) Ethylene content in the gas phase was derermined with a gas chromato graph (Hitachi 063, Tokyo). All assays were run in duplicate. Peroxidase activity was assayed by a modified colorimetric method of Chance and Maehly.9) The protein content was determined by the method of Lowry et al., with bovine serum albumin as a stan dard.10) All the operations for purification were performed at 0 to 4•Ž.
