Sterols are known to exist in the vegetable kingdom in three different forms: free state, acyl ester and glycoside. Research studies on soybean sterols under way in our labora tory required a systematic method for their fractional determination in three forms. A column chromatographic method utilizing Florisil (activated magnesium silicate) gave satisfactory results on a single chromatogram. The method is applicable to other oil seeds with similar success. In all the seed oils tested, we could not detect the presence of sterols in ester form.
