Nutrient composition of the diet affects follicular activity, embryonic development and hormones in ruminants. Objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of F erula communis L. on some reproductive parameters of Awassi sheep. The experiment was carried out on 29 (15-16 months old) Awassi ewes. All ewes were allocated to receive either a control (14% CP and 11.7 MJ ME/kg) or a diet supplemented with 5% (75g) or 10% powdered F. communis root (150g), respectively. Oestrous were synchronized using intra-vaginal sponges and oestrous behaviours following sponge removal were recorded at 24, 36 and 48 h. Reproductive tracts of slaughtered animals removed at the end of 21-day period. Rate of animals’ exhibit oestrous behaviour within 24 h following sponge removal were 80, 60 and 10% for 5C, 10C and control groups, respectively. The number of 1-3 mm follicles per ovary in 5C group were higher (6.7±0.50) than those in the controls (4.5±0.50) and 10C animals (5.7±0.55). The number of large follicles per ovary in control group were higher than those in the treatment groups. Plasma concentrations of oestrogen and LH peak were similar for control and treatment groups. Progesterone production of luteal cells was higher for both treatment groups cultured in vitro. Herewith, supplementation of the diet of Awassi Sheep with F. communis root during breeding season may enhance ovulation rate and luteal activity.
