Most immunohistochemical studies of S-100 protein have been focused on cells of the nervous system, and S-100 protein was also widely distributed in tissues and organs (22). S-100 protein is a group of calcium-binding proteins in the same category as calmodulin, troponin C, parvalbumin, and intestinal calcium-binding protein. Biochemically and biologically, as well as evolutionally, S-100 protein might be involved in the interaction of calcium ions within the cells, and in cell regulation.
