Swamp buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) have received little scientific attention in spite of their great contribution to agricultural production in many Asian countries. Since the publication of a book by COCKRILL1), the need for promotion of extensive studies on buffalo has been gradually recognized; i.e. some scientific works have been riveted not only for draught but also dairy and meat purpose. The available knowledge on this animal is gradually increasing and becoming more comprehensive, but the reproductive aspects have not been studied as extensively as in other domestic animals. In Japan, the buffalo is a rather unpopular animal and its distribution is limited only to Okinawa islands. SHINJO2) demonstrated first the origin and conditions of buffalo production in the islands, but there has been no report on reproduction. As buffalo belongs to the same tribe of Bovini as cattle, it is of interest to compare reproductive phenomena in buffalo with those in cattle. The present study was undertaken to obtain basic data related to the estrous cycle in buffalo, namely the length of estrous cycle, duration of estrus, time of ovulation and signs of estrus.
