Teratogenic and embryocidal actions of adenine in the mouse were demonstrated (1–2). Since adenine is an important purine metabolite in animals of all kinds as well as in plants, it was decided to investigate other purine metabolites and a xanthine oxidase inhibitor as to whether or not similar actions on developing mouse embryos could be demonstrated.
