Obstetric VTE has attracted much attention because it is one of the leading causes of maternal deaths in developed countries.4 Although maternal-death-related VTE (MD-VTE) has decreased over the past decades in several countries,4 the extent of the improvement is insufficient. The United Nations Millennium Development Goal 5 targeted a reduction in maternal deaths by 75% until 2015.5 In Japan, according to the national vital statistics,6 both the rate of maternal death and that of obstetric embolism-specific maternal death have decreased by approximately 50% from 1995 to 2012 (Figure 1). However, Kobayashi et al reported that the number obstetric PE cases had increased in Japan; the incidence of antenatal PE and the fatality rate of PE were 0.02% and 0.0025%, respectively.7 PE Epidemiology of Obstetric Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) are the 2 major manifestations of VTE, which can cause cardiopulmonary collapse and even death. The mortality rate for patients with untreated or undiagnosed PE has been reported as high as 30%.1 The incidence of VTE has been increasing in Japan because of the westernization of life-style and rapid aging of the population. Sakuma et al have reported that the number of patients with new onset PE increased in the past 10 years.2 Recently, the Japan VTE Treatment Registry reported that deaths from VTE in Japan were higher than in Western countries.3
