Since the A-weighting curve is based on equal loudness contours, conventional sound level meters can be regarded as a very first preliminary step towards sound measurement systems based on features of the human hearing system. In the meantime, sophisticated analysis systems for sound quality evaluation were elaborated, which allow the indication of loudness, N, sharpness, S, fluctuation strength, F, and roughness, R. A block diagram of such a system is displayed in figure 1 (for details see Fastl, 1998).
