Thoughts on Take Care of Yourself In the last lec tures that Michel Foucault gave at the Collège de France, from 1982 to 1984, he addressed the his to ry, the prac tices, and the dis ci plines concerning the care of the self. In these lec tures, given while Foucault him self was dy ing of AIDS, he pon ders Socrates’s last ut ter ance to his dis ci ple Crito: Take care of your self. From that state ment, Foucault em barks on a heart-wrenching, phil o soph i cally tren chant in quiry into what the con cept of care meant, from the an cient world to the mod ern: care of the body, care of the spir it, care of the oth er, and care of speech, that is, of the free dom to speak free ly, with open ness, and from a place of truth. These draw ings are com prised of the sin gle phrase, the last one, ap par ent ly, which Socrates uttered: Take care of yourself. Language, Foucault sug ests, can be thought of as a large open ing through which we ad vance, in the in ter est of uncovering or dis cov er ing ar eas where we stray, where mean ing will be gin to un ravel or be dis sem bled, be come am big u ous, or dis solve. My in ter est in how graphic dis tur bances in writ ing can push be yond our dis cur sive bound aries is the in spi ra tion for much of my draw ing/writ ing practice. I con tinue to be in trigued by the idea that we may la bor within lan guage to lift our selves out of it, that we may write to ap proach the dis rup tion of writ ing itself. On the draw ing page, par tic u larly with Foucault in mind, the ink traces the fris son or trem bling where I ex tol the in ti macy be tween writ ing and draw ing. I em brace rep e ti tion; the lure of re peat ing a phrase, over and over, is an ef ort to fur ther com pre hend it but also to trans fig ure it. In these are nas of the spo ken, written, or imag ined, we, in Foucault’s words, “light fires” and, in so do ing, we ex plore ideas and move ments that sig nal or pro voke the trans for ma tive. The draw ings urge a kind of aes thetic dis equi lib ri um, a wa ver ing of legibility; while they dis rupt the ca pac ity to de ci pher their com pos ite words on one lev el, they of er a con tem pla tive space on an oth er. The sim ple phrase Take Care of Yourself has prompted this pro ject.
