BackgroundPhytochemical screening, antimicrobial and antioxidant activities ofthe hexane, ethylacetate and methanol crude extracts of Senna occidentalis (L.) leaves were studied in this work. Theaim of the work is to ascertain the level of antimicrobial and antioxidantproperties of different solvent extracts of Sennaoccidentalis plant.MethodsThe preliminary screening of the various extracts was carried outusing standard methods and the results revealed the presence of tannins,alkaloids, reducing sugar, phenols, anthraquinones, resins, saponins andglycosides. The antimicrobial screening was carried out using the followingorganisms; Staphylococcus aureus, Eshericha coli,Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruguinosa, Salmonella typhi, Klebsiellaepneumoniae, Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, Penicilliumnotatum and Rhizopusstolonifer. The free radical scavenging capacity using hydrogenperoxide was equally determined to evaluate the antioxidant activities of theextracts.ResultsThe results obtained showed that Sennaoccidentalis (L.) leaf extracts have interesting pharmacologicalactive compounds with great radical scavenging and antimicrobial effects and assuch could be used in ethno medicine for treatment of some infections andailments.ConclusionFurther investigations on the chemical compositions and possible isolation ofactive ingredients would be carried out.
