was greater at the cervical erector spinae for the HSP, compared to the SPIP (p = 0.001) and NSP (p = 0.001). Thoracic erector spinae (p < 0.044) and external oblique (EO) (p < 0.006) muscle activity was greater during the SPIP and NSP, compared to the HSP. No other differences were found. Discussion The NSP was identified as a relatively midrange sitting posture. Education aiming to optimise asymptomatic individuals sitting habits may therefore benefit from highlighting the importance of midrange postures. It should be considered that both the NSP and SPIP when maintained will likely lead to fatigue due to increased global muscle activity, compared to the HSP. To reduce the onset of fatigue, incorporation of active movements may be beneficial. Further study is however required to support this. Conclusion The results of the current study support the hypothesis that the HSP, SPIP and NSP differ in asymptomatic individuals. Differences in spinal posture were at the lower thoracic and upper lumbar spine regions.
