The objective of this study is to determine whether different typesof caregiver support services are associated with different outcomes for male and femalecaregivers. Information was obtained on 148 caregivers’ use of three types of supportservices provided by government-contracted agencies: counseling and education services,respite and supplemental services, and financial services. Five caregiver outcomes wereincluded. Use of counseling and education services and financial services was associatedwith better caregiver outcomes in female caregivers, but not male caregivers. Amongcaregivers using respite and supplemental types of services, male caregivers showedbetter outcomes than did female caregivers. Female caregivers who used respite andsupplemental services showed worse outcomes in caregiver mastery and caregiversatisfaction than those who did not use the services. Male and female caregiversresponded differently to the caregiver support service. Providing female caregivers withcounseling services along with respite services may result in added benefits for femalecaregivers
