Biosafety professionals working in research programs often need to enhance or increase their expertise in laboratory animal science to competently review animal protocols, give input on safety practices and equipment for animal procedures, inspect animal facilities and operations, and train staff on working safely with animals infected with pathogens. Biosafety professionals can find many resources available from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) that can help them expand their knowledge and support their training of personnel. AALAS is a membership association of professionals dedicated to the humane care and treatment of laboratory animals, as well as the quality research that leads to scientific gains that benefit people and animals. AALAS values biosafety professionals as vital members of the animal research community. Likewise, laboratory animal professionals find great benefit through interaction with the professionals associated with the American Biological Safety Association (ABSA). AALAS educational initiatives aim to develop much needed training resources for laboratory animal science, including a growing body of animal biosafety training. Because laboratory animal science touches on so many disciplines , developing high-quality content depends heavily on volunteer experts who are willing to collaborate in writing about and reviewing specific topics. The animal research community benefits greatly from these individuals' dedication and commitment to share their knowledge through these avenues. AALAS thanks the many ABSA members who have generously contributed biosafety content to AALAS educational resources; all are gratefully credited in the acknowledgments in these courses. As a source of laboratory animal science training, the AALAS Learning Library (ALL) (AALAS, 2013a) offers an enriching experience, with over 170 courses plus exams on animal methodologies, animal welfare, regulatory compliance , animal biosafety, and public outreach. Courses are reviewed on a rotating 3-year schedule; and at intervening times, additional updates are made when identified due to changing mandates, errata reports, etc. An annual subscription (by individual, institution, AALAS branch, or AALAS global partner) gives access to all courses and exams plus new ones as published (new courses are continuously in production), plus documentation of personnel training activities via certificates, transcripts, and reports. Multiple types of certificates are available to support an institution's choice on training documentation: Completion Certificate called " CEU Certificate " (course completed, exam passed); Exam Certificate (exam passed); and Program Certificate (required courses of a curriculum program completed and exams passed).
