The purpose of this inaugural article is to show that open access journals provide a unique dissemination strategy that effectively meets the demands of health fcxservices research and applied decision-making. I will begin with a general discussion of the merits and limitations of open access journals, providing an overview of how and why health services research can benefi t from this publication method. I will then conclude with a brief description of a new open access health services research journal.
