At a trial that began on 13 December 1983, in Tallinn, three Estonian dissidents — a woman, Lagle Parek, and two men, Heiki Ahonen and Arvo Pesti — have been convicted of anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda under Article 68 of the Criminal Code of the Estonian SSR. The three, arrested in the spring of 1983, were among the more prominent Estonian dissidents. The oldest of them, Lagle Parek, was born in 1941, the same year that Estonia was occupied by the Soviets. Her family's fate under Soviet rule typifies the suffering inflicted on many Estonians. Her father, a captain in the army of independent Estonia, was arrested a few days after the Soviet occupation and executed. In 1949, the eightyear-old Lagle was deported to Siberia with her mother, Elsbet Parek, her grandmother and her 18-year-old sister. In 1951, Elsbet was brought back to Estonia, tried on a charge of hiding prohibited books, and imprisoned. She was released in 1953 under an amnesty for female prisoners. Lagle, her sister, and their grandmother were not allowed to return to Estonia until 1955. Lagle Parek attended the Tallinn Polytechnic for Construction and Mechanics, graduating as an architect. She was subsequently employed at the Tartu branch of the Institute for Blueprints of Cultural Monuments. As far as can be ascertained, her dissident activity began in 1979, when she signed an appeal on behalf of three human rights activists who had been arrested — the Russians Gleb Yakunin and Tatyana Velikanova, and the Lithuanian Antanas Terleckas. In September 1980, she was among the 10 Estonians and 10 Lithuanians who sent a letter to Lech Walesa congratulating him for 'laying the foundation for the democratic reforms that are so greatly needed by the whole Socialist camp': In 1981 she travelled to Vologda for the funeral of Yuri Kukk, who had died in a labour camp, and she was among the 19 Estonian signatories of a protest addressed to the Presidium of the USSR Supreme Soviet condemning the way Kukk had been treated. She was repeatedly interrogated and harassed by KGB officials, but her dissident activity continued unabated: for instance, in October 1981 she joined 12 other Estonians, 15 Latvians, and 10 Lithuanians in signing an open letter to the governments of the USSR, Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Sweden requesting that the Baltic Sea and the three Baltic republics be included in any nuclear-free zone in northern Europe.
