The impetus for this special issue came from my couple of years of research experience on multi-phase fluid/solid flow modeling and simulation and many discussions with my colleagues who are also the guest editors contributing to this special issue. Through an extensive review of the current literature, we realized that there were no recent and comprehensive works to summarize the new advances in multi-phase fluid and multi-scale particulate reactive flow modeling and simulation. Given the complex nature of multi-phase fluid–particulate flow, and its importance in the fields of chemical engineering, environmental engineering, and petroleum engineering, among others, the collection of most recent research advances in multi-phase fluid and multi-scale particulate reactive flow modeling and simulation and, in particular, their applications in petroleum engineering is more necessary than ever.
