Knox et al. (2008, hereafter KMW) document anempirical relation between a diagnostic quantity andclear-air turbulence (CAT) and argue for a theoreticalbasis involving gravity waves to support this result.While wedonotquestionthe empiricalevidencefortheeffectiveness of this diagnostic, KMW justify its successbased on the work of Ford (1994a), who described theemissionofgravitywavesbybalancedvortexmotionsinrotating shallow water. Ford’s work itself was based onthe ideas of Lighthill (1952), describing the emission ofacousticwavesbysmall-scaleturbulentmotions.Infact,that theory is not applicable to the ows and conditionsthat KMW consider.
