Difficult-to-heal, chronic wounds in people with Diabetes Mellitus (DM) have been associated with oxidative stress caused by chronic hyperglycemia. Bee honey was described as having therapeutic properties in healing due to different properties, i.e. antioxidation. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of topical applications of Eucalyptus Honey (EH) from Brazil on cutaneous wounds of diabetic mice compared to the results obtained with Manuka’s honey from New Zealand (MH); an international standard. Methods: Experimental study using Swiss adult, male mice induced to DM using Alloxan. After 30 days, dorsal cutaneous wounds of 1 cm (total thickness) were performed and were treated daily with the said honeys, using as controls the artificial honey (AH) and the absence of treatment. The wound healing kinetics and histological analyses were assessed, as well as the physicochemical and antioxidant properties of honey samples. The research protocol was approved by the ethics committee of the ICB / USP. Treatments with EH and MH accelerated the closure of wounds in diabetic animals from 18 to 15 days, similar to the control animals (treated or untreated). Treatment with AH did not have the same effect. Histological examination of the wounds on day 3 showed a better appearance of the lesion in the diabetic animals treated with honey, compared to untreated diabetics. Apparently, the EH and MH promoted increased recruitment of inflammatory cells to the lesion. On the 15 day, only the control animals and diabetics treated with EH and MH showed complete epithelialization. Concerning the analysis of honey samples, EH compared to MH, had lower concentrations of phenolic acids (109.6 ± 2.3 vs. 171.6 ± 5.9 vs. 22.7 ± 0.9 mg / 100 g for artificial honey) and higher antioxidant capacity (36.5 ± 2.1 vs. 22.6 ± 1.6 vs mg / L; not detected in artificial honey). In conclusion, this study shows that the EH and MH promote the healing of skin wounds in diabetic mice, probably by the presence of phenolic acids and flavonoids between other compounds, promoting antioxidant activity.
