Although the performance of integrated systems is influenced by the quality of data processed, the majority of companies do not guarantee the completeness or accuracy of data foundations, nor do they structure or manage this data to reflect their business or product. Among the manufacturing data foundations, bills of materials play a key role. They are built of part numbers, are equivalent to the nongraphical representation of a product, and are shared by many departments within a company. On the other hand, any discussion about part numbers should also include the classification systems, since many companies apply the same code for identification and classification purposes. In this context, the objective of this work is to characterize the available alternatives to bills of materials, part numbers and classification systems in integrated manufacturing environments. Therefore, a huge investigation into bibliography was conducted, as well as field research together with specialists in this field of study. The results obtained from both sources were analyzed and compared, special attention being paid to similarities and differences between them.
