A.DUFRICHE-DESGENETTES’ (1804-ca. 1885) life and work has remained in the dark until today, although he was a founding member of the Société de Linguistique de Paris. It was only some 70 years after his death that R. Godel in 1957, in his Sources manuscrites of the Saussurean Cours, bestowed recognition on Dufriche-Desgenettes as the inventor of the term ‘phoneme’ in a paper presented to the Paris Linguistic Society on May 24 1873. The present paper is the first attempt to bring together the essential information available about Dufriche-Desgenettes, the man and his work.
