In recent years, a number ofdifferent ion-selective electrodes for the measurement of sodium and potassium have been evaluated against existing methods of flame photometry with good agreement between the two methods in terms of precision and accuracy [1-6]. Recently, another ion-selective electrode instrument has been introduced--the AM 721 ’Direct dip’ system (Kontron Instruments Ltd, Campfield Road, St. Albans ALl 5JG, Hertfordshire, UK). This instrument is able to measure directly the ion concentration of both sodium and potassium in whole blood, plasma or urine. This paper reports an evaluation of the instrument and provides some comparative data with other systems.
