Cardiac energy deprivation is the consequence of a complex alteration of all bioenergetic cellular components of the dysfunctional myocardium. The study of bioenergetics of non-ischemic failing heart, a challenging clinical entity with a lack of evidence for therapy, continues to be a topic of great interest. However, translation of knowledge to therapeutic purposes is far from straightforward. The development of new pre-clinical models of non-ischemic HF focused on regulation of mitochondrial function should be encouraged. Hamilton and coworkers developed a reproducible murine model of hypertensive associated non-ischemic HF induced induced by long-term treatment with NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME, 0.3 mg/ml with 1% NaCl, p.o.) and angiotensin II (AngII, 0.7 mg/kg/day, s.c.). Despite the limitations, this model may improve our understanding of the mechanisms of non-ischemic HF and provide a valuable tool to test targeted new therapeutic strategies.
