LiMn1.5Ni0.5O4 operates at 4.7 V vs. Li/Li + and has a theoretical capacity of 147 mAh g -1 which make the material an attractive cathode for high-energy and high power applications such as electric and plug-in hyb rid vehicles[1]. The high operating voltage, however, is above the oxidation stability window of conventiona l carbonate based electrolytes, which leads to severe side reactions and reduces cycle life. In addition, lit hium is reinserted in the electrode during storage at charg ed states, resulting in self-discharge [2]. Several f actors can be expected to influence the rate of relithiation, particularly state of charge, temperature and elect rolyte choice [3]. We have recently shown that surface fa cets play an important role in lithium transport propert i s and side reactivities with the electrolyte [4]. In thi s presentation we report the detailed studies on side reactions between the electrolyte and LiMn 1.5Ni0.5O4 crystals with different surface facets.
