Despite the rapid expansion in computer sciences, little has been done to give liberal-arts students a literacy in computation. Not the knowledge of a professional programmer, but rather an acquaintance with computers and their potentialities is meant; the sort of knowledge which it would have been desirable for an educated person at the time of the Industrial Revolution to have had of machines and their potentialities. A "package" of computer instruction is described which seeks to attain this cheaply, within the existing framework of courses, with minimal computer equipment, minimal faculty retraining, and minimal administrative involvement. The key is brevity (three hours of lecture, about two hours at the computer), which allows the package to be inserted in existing sciences courses for non-science majors by a visiting lecturer. High student enthusiasm results from being able to program and operate the computer after brief instruction. Institutional acceptance of more extensive and sophisticated computer education for liberal-arts students is promoted by this program's success. Two years' experience at New College and the main campus of Hofstra University, with a total of 300 non-science students, will be described; an additional 600 students yearly is projected.
