At Indiana University the recent demand for computing instruction has been overwhelming for full-time staff who serve as instructors on a voluntary basis. This has resulted in a somewhat stressful situation in finding full-time computing staff to voluntarily support the needs of the non-credit Instructional Program of the computing center. A recent study of Big Ten University computing center instructional programs indicated that Indiana University’s computing center is somewhat unique in our the of part-time computing staff as instructors. We believe we truly have a treasure in our part-time consulting staff and that the potential for use of part-time consulting staff can prove successful for other computing center instructional programs as well. Currently at Indiana University, the percentage of instructors who are full-time staff is 15% while the part-time consulting staff comprises 85%. This paper will share many of the factors we consider key elements to the success of this working relationship.
