This paper describes a knowledge acquisition methodology designed for the diagnostic domain. The conventional interaction between domain expert and knowledge engineer in crafting the knowledge base for the particular expert system shell used has several well known disadvantages. An object based approach, which eliminates the need for knowledge engineering is proposed. The domain knowledge is represented by suitably defined objects that allow for communication in a language most familiar to the domain expert. The representation builds on the notion of a domain knowledge state space and the mapping of it to the objects.
