Several disastrous security attacks can be attributed to delays in patchingsoftware vulnerabilities. While researchers and practitioners have paidsignificant attention to automate vulnerabilities identification and patchdevelopment activities of software security patch management, there has beenrelatively little effort dedicated to gain an in-depth understanding of thesocio-technical aspects, e.g., coordination of interdependent activities of thepatching process and patching decisions, that may cause delays in applyingsecurity patches. We report on a Grounded Theory study of the role ofcoordination in security patch management. The reported theory consists of fourinter-related dimensions, i.e., causes, breakdowns, constraints, andmechanisms. The theory explains the causes that define the need forcoordination among interdependent software and hardware components and multiplestakeholders' decisions, the constraints that can negatively impactcoordination, the breakdowns in coordination, and the potential correctivemeasures. This study provides potentially useful insights for researchers andpractitioners who can carefully consider the needs of and devise suitablesolutions for supporting the coordination of interdependencies involved insecurity patch management.
